What Are Your Heels Trying to Tell You?

If you have been endlessly working on the hard skin on your heels to get ready for sandal season, this may interest you!
We often think of hard skin on our heels as simply a cosmetic issue. We moisturize, exfoliate, and try to soften the roughness. Who doesn't love a pedicure!?
But what if our heels could tell us something more?
Our heels are our foundation. They support us every day, carrying us through life's responsibilities, challenges, and commitments. Physically, hard skin develops as protection—a response to pressure, friction, and stress. Physically (on the foot map) the heels mainly mirror your low back, hips, psoas and sciatic area.
But symbolically (if you know me, you know I love to learn the emotional meanings to physical symptoms!), it can invite us to consider where we may be feeling pressure in our lives as well. In reflexology, the feet are split into 5 zones; the heels are in the 5th zone. The 5th zone has to do with feeling secure. If we have hard callouses skin we may ask ourselves if we are feeling secure and safe in our self, in our relationships, within our family or our careers.
For many women in midlife, feeling pressure, extra responsibilities and extra stress seems to be happening everywhere.
We may be caring for children, supporting aging parents, managing careers, maintaining relationships, and trying to hold everything together. Over time, we become incredibly strong. Yet sometimes that strength can look a lot like carrying more than we were ever meant to carry alone. Is this you?
What if the roughness on our heels wasn't something to criticize, but something to become curious about?
Three Questions to Reflect On
1. Where in my life do I feel unsupported?
Sometimes we become so accustomed to being the helper that we forget we need support too.
2. What am I carrying that isn't mine to carry?
Not every responsibility belongs on your shoulders.
3. Where could I allow more softness?
Not weakness. Softness. Rest. Compassion. Receiving.
Remember
The body is wonderfully intelligent. Sometimes hard skin is simply the result of pressure, footwear, or dry skin. But sometimes physical symptoms can serve as reminders to pause and check in with ourselves.
Perhaps your heels are not asking for perfection.
Perhaps they are asking for support.
At Meraki Integrated Wellness, I believe wellness is about more than symptoms. It's about listening to the messages your body may be sending and exploring them with curiosity and compassion.
The next time you're caring for your feet, take a moment to ask yourself:
"How well am I supporting myself?"
You might be surprised by the answer.
